Oceans Symphony

Hello! Welcome to Oceans Symphony's official website!

I'll be utilizing this page to host information about the project :)!
This site is an active work in progress, as is the Oceans Symphony (OS) app.
The app is much more complete than this site at the moment lol, I appreciate your patience :D

some words about ai, vibe-coding, oceans symphony

Unlike Oceans Symphony, this website is completely human-coded!

I am hosting this page on Neocities, since I've been wanting to make one for a while, there's massive freedom, and it will help me learn.
I see this page (and the neocities spaces) as closer to an art project than a tool, thus I personally am not comfortable using AI generation for it.
However, both Oceans Symphony and Pesture Drawing were coded by AI. I wrote probably 1% or less of the code for each of these websites.

Theres a great amount of hesitancy, suspicion, fear, and anger towards AI. Understandably.
Thus, from the apps inception, I have maintained a great focus on transparency, and I will continue to do so within the best of my capacity.
In service of this pursuit, I plan to have a section on this page where I will upload transcripts of some of the prompts/conversations of what the development of OS has been like, given it is "vibe-coded". I will also have a roadmap/planned features section. And lots more! maybe like a whole app wiki or something at somepoint, who knows.

Despite having vibe-coded these tools, I am not comfortable using AI for creative pursuits.
This is because I see the value of art as being within the act of creation - not within the production of product. Furthermore, because of the ways AI models are trained, AI-image generation is an inherent act of art thievery and copywright infringement which turns the brilliance and wonders of human creativity into mass-produced, thoughtless garbage.

All art on this webpage, and within all of my websites is hand-made by my system personally with absolutely zero AI involvement.

Why then would I go anywhere near AI?

I just see AI within code production vs. creative pursuits as being within different worlds.
The process of coding is like learning the language of the computer, speaking within its' terms to build structures that behave to your design intentions.
Vibe-coding moves the weight of translation from the human onto the computer.

There is a specific niche I have advertised OS within, wherein the app is frequently subject of specific critiques regarding it being vibe-coded.
The critique says that OS ought not be used or supported, because the code was written by AI, and that I am morally corrupt for contributing to such blatant environmental harm, that I ought not complain when data centers are moved near me.

I think this critique in fact disservices the disabled community and working class at broad while serving to benefit those within power, by displacing the source of damage from those select powerful elite; the major capitalist 1%, whom lobby against environmental protection policies and corrupt the structures of power/government to benefit their greed - the ownership of this harm is displaced unto laypeople who ultimately have no individual power of influence over these things. This is an act of lateral in-fighting, distracting and disempowering us, and thus benefiting the corporate elite.

In contrary to this critique's assumption, because OS is offline and doesn't/barely uses servers (the opt-in friends relay is on a server, but it is super light-weight and off by default anyways), users are actually utilizing data centers less by using OS than they would by utilizing any of the cloud-based services out there. No shame or disrespect to these other services! The only reason I mention this is because some people hear "vibe-coded" and mistakenly assume "this app was made through massive, gross, environmental destruction and if you use it you are supporting the development of data centers and that same destruction".
Individual usage of AI for coding is leagues and miles below the energy/resource consumption required to train the models, or through commercial production.
My development of OS is equivilant to running maybe an extra refrigerator in my garage.
Every time you use facebook, reddit, tiktok, google, tumblr, etc. you are utilizing data centers.

OS is specifically designed as a companion aid for dissociative systems, those impacted with a complex dissociative disorder which is a medical disability.
Just as disabled people ought not be shamed for utilizing disposable, single-use, or pre-cut/packaged food items, disabled people ought not be shamed for using the tools and resources available to them.
Even if these things have greater environmental impact than alternatives, that impact is a spec of dust compared to the desert that is spread from capitalist, political, and government insititions.
there is no ethical consumption under capitalism. We are all doing our best to navigate this hell. Oceans Symphony helps me with exactly that.

If someone wishes not to use OS because it is vibe-coded that is absolutely not a problem at all, I totally understand and respect that decision. I only say all this because I think the Oceans Symphony userbase ought not be shamed or accused of harm for simply trying out an app.

Oceans Symphony is designed intentionally for dissociative systems bc I built it for myself.
I advertise it as such to target how dissociative systems are so massively misunderstood, underrecognized, and under-served, not as a way to exclude.
The app is free for anyone to use for any reason and I am strictly intollerant of any gatekeeping of it.

This page and its' subsections will be dedicated to all about Oceans Symphony! If you want to see my other stuff, press the "Penumbra" logo in the upper left.
While this page is the "official" Oceans Symphony website, I dont consider it a super formal thing. I'm just an amateur random guy who is making this thing and want to share about it.

thanks for stopping by!

Features list

The following has already been implemented
  • Privacy First
    • By default, everything is fully offline - nothing goes to any servers.
    • Data is stored locally on your device with optional on-device at-rest encryption (AES-256-GCM)
    • The opt-in friends relay utilizes a minimal server-relay which is end-to-end encrypted.
      • The only data that leaves the device is what you explicitly choose to share, to the friends you choose
      • Users can choose to share either "full" (alter names, initials, and colors), count only (just a number count of the amount in front), or nothing.
      • Privacy levels allow further, per-alter and per-friend privacy configuration
  • Alters
    • Import your system from simply plural, pluralkit, pluralspace, or any app supporting OpenPlural export format!
      • Simply Plural .json exports will import everything - front history, avatars, alters + full profile data, chat history - everything. If anything doesn't, please let me know!
    • Track front history
      • Pin alters for quick access
      • Set primary or co-front
      • Retroactively enter/edit/view front session history in the Timeline
    • No alter limit
  • Subsystems & groups
    • Easily organize complex system structures with the groups and subsystems features
    • Groups and subsystems work similarly within the app, but subsystems have an assigned "root" member
    • In the alters lists (such as on the alters page, in the set front modal, etc),
  • Analytics
    • Comprehensive analytics which utilizes the multitude of entry points; emotions, activities, symptoms, co-fronting patters, and so much more, to naturally reveal patterns of your system's functioning over time.
  • Quick Support
    • A small bubble icon on every page, click any time to access Quick Support!
    • Quick Support hosts a guided breathing section, grounding exercises, learning modules based primarily on the Finding Solid Ground Workbook, and a resources section for external resources for dissociation and trauma
    • Use the guided "help me figure out what I need" to get a few suggestions of grounding exercises tailored for where you're at
    • Rate grounding exercises by their effectiveness, (this can be alter-specific)
    • You can enter/create your own grounding exercises
  • Learning and Resources
    • Found within the Quick Support menu, Leanring and resources provide real tools and guidance for understanding and managing life with a dissociative disorder
    • The learning module is primarily based on the Finding Solid Ground workbook (the same workbook my therapist and I have been working through for my therapeutic work!)
    • The learning module has areas for responses and reflections
    • Resources provides links to resources I have personally found invaluable as a DID system, which I have been utilzing for years prior to my diagnosis, and which are well aclaimed
  • System Map(s)
    • System Ananlytics Map
      • Utilizes front history to display cofronting patterns
      • by default, alters are displayed in a circle.
      • Alters are positioned to proportionally reflect their time in front
      • Selecting an alter puts them at the center of the circle, and the other alters' positions correlate to the amount of time they have spent in front alongside that alter
    • Inner World Map
      • A free-form canvas where you can design your inner-world
      • You can create multiple "maps", with multiple "layers" similar to an art program (where the map is the canvas)
      • Freely place "locations" upon the canvas
        • alters placed within locations in the map are defined as within their location in the rest of the app
        • Locations can have background images (including gifs) and can be freely repositioned, or position locked
        • Locations can be placed within locations to create sub-locations
        • locations can be linked to other maps or specific layers of different maps
        • locations have specific profile pages which can be edited like alter profile pages
  • Activity Tracking/planning system
    • One of my greatest struggles as a system is keeping track of plans, time management, and "holding onto" my accomplishments
    • To support this, I have created the activity tracker! It is inspired by the hobonichi weekly spread
    • Track your activities, schedule plans, optionally view alters/emotions logged in visual blocks
    • The activity grid is divided into seven days, and 24 hours, and can be further demarcated into half-hour or 15-minute intervals
  • Quick-access privacy-cover/functioning grocery list/inventory tracker
    • Three quick taps activates a privacy cover which anonamyzes your screen
    • If you have encyrption enabled, you can toggle the screen to lock behind the privacy screen, so that the password must be entered to access the rest of the OS app
    • can be toggled off or the amount of taps to trigger can be adjusted
    • The grocery list is a real functioning grocery list, the date an item has been marked is timestamped, and crossed off items can be deleted or returned to the list. This way, you can keep track of what you bought, when you bought it, when you run out and then you can set it to needing to be purchased again
  • Polls
    • Create polls for your system to vote on
    • Votes can be cast per alter, or as an anonymous tally
  • Journals
    • Create free-entry journals with in-depth editing/customization capabilities
    • Dream Journals can be created, and automatically saved when entering notes after logging a sleep entry and toggling "dream journal"
    • You can "journal" a switch to save information about a switch in your journals
    • You can assign alters as authors to journals
  • Bulletin Board
    • Save notes, communicate with your alters, quickly create plans, log activities, create to-do's or polls, all easily within the bulletin board
    • By default the bulletin board lives at the bottom of the dashboard
    • There is a default "plain" text mode, and a "fancy" text mode
      • Plain text mode is a simple, minimal text entry window
      • Fancy text mode displays the advancedMiniToolbar, which allows text formatting and image upload
      • Switch freely beteen each
    • Bulletins have authors!
      • The default author is detected by the current front
      • if there is no active front, the author will be set as the System, and display with the System Name and System Avatar defined in settings menu
      • you can also define authors quickly through signposting
        • use "-[displayname/alias]" in a bulletin post, where [displayname/alias] is the alias or display name of your intended author.
        • Multiple authors can be signposted in a single post
    • Send notifications to other alters using the "@[displayname/alias]" mentioning system!
  • Therapy Report
    • Export an overview of all in-app entries over a specified time period
    • Fully customizable so you can easily hide entire sections and/or specific symtpoms/habits, activities, and alters
    • Optionally include a cover letter
    • Preview your therapy report and export easily to a pdf, or copy the raw text
    • Especially helpful for sharing with your therapist or careteam to help communicate what amnesia might leave behind
  • Guided System Meeting
    • Adapted from the 5 Minute System Check-In by Monika Ostroff, LICSW, CEDS-S / Healing My Parts
    • Incorporates aspects of the app like guided breathing, system chat, and the emotions picker
    • All fields are completely optional - theyre there if you want or you can ignore them
    • For the "invite sharing" step, you can "open a dialogue" which utilizes the discord-style system chat which you can utilize to record "live discussion" of the meeting
    • Save the open dialogue to be contained just within the meeting, or you can link it to a channel in your system chat
  • To-do, reminders, plans
One of my greatest adversaries is task-management and goal follow-through. OS has multiple aids to help you remember plans.
    • Preset "Daily Tasks" which reset daily
      • Can customize, create new tasks
      • can also create weekly, monthly, yearly tasks
      • "Daily tasks" are pinned to the dashboard to give you an immediate display of what you need to do, or have already done
      • One difficulty with this is forgetting to log that you've done things (like taking medication), and then being unable to later remember if you'd taken it and forgotten to log or just never took it. To overcome this, I suggest making physical notes and indicators in direct line of sight for when you perform these things (such as on a bathroom mirror) "Dont forget to log in the app!", until it is a more established habbit
      • You can add pinned tasks to "quick actions" which can display when you press and hold the app icon from your device's home screen (if the app is installed)
    • Dedicated To-Do list page
      • You can easily create new to-do's through the bulletin board
      • To-do's can be pinned to the dashboard
      • Set "priority" or "due date" (must be done by) or "schedule" (planned time to do)
      • Optionally link to an activity category (or create an associated to-do while planning an activity in the activity tracker)
    • The Activity Tracker page is the home base for logging or planning
      • Create activity categories, which can be nested within other activites
        • For example, you may have a parent activity: Productive
        • Nested inside is:
          Exercise
          studying
          work
          cleaning
        • And nested inside the studying activity is:
          Math
          Languages
          astronomy
      • Then, when logging or planning activities, you can search an activity or select as specific as you would like; selecting astronomy will automatically log the parent studying and productive categories within your analytics or other areas of the app
      • Or you can just choose "productive" if you dont want to be so specific
      • The activity tracker displays your week in a time-block grid
        • Customize the y-axis time interval (hourly, 30, 15 minute blocks), adjust row and column height/width, adjust sun/mon weekly start, and 24hr or AMPM display
  • Friends
    • You can share your front status with friends via a friends code!
    • this is end-to-end encrypted
    • Only a minimal amount of data is sent to servers - at most, only the display name and color of the currently fronting alter. Literally nothing else, and this is only if you explicitly set it up to do so
  • Groups
  • Quick Check-in
  • Customization
  • Contacts

roadmap + planned features!

| planned features | | in-progress developments | | implemented |
  • Singlet-mode - a version for singlets that use the app to be notified of the front activity of the system in their life, absent of alters features, and featuring dedicated learning sections specifically for those w/o dissociative disorders (and common comorbidites) to learn about them, and better understand and support. Should also be able to utilize the other features of the app like activity tracker and emotions symptoms all that.
  • in-depth per-page customization
    • upload custom fonts
    • define banner, theme, font, etc per page(s) and per alter
    • allow specific pages/features to be "display-locked" so like, if you want it to display a specific way regardless of which theme preset is aactive it will
  • Ensure more things, notes, entry points are rendered on the timeline and activity tracker
  • user should be able to configure different levels of fronting beyond "fronting","cofronting"
  • Be able to attribute emotions to alters in quick-checkin
  • Transaltions!!! More languages than just english!!
  • Expand the quick-support learning modules
  • clarify the difference between a "quick task" and a "quick plan"
  • Advanced/personal preferences/boundaries - an expansion of the pronouns feature where users can input a label and then an associated comfort level (1-3 or 1-5 from hate/neutral/love etc.).
  • preffered terms/personal boundaries ought to be shareable with friends/an option to display only preferred terms instead of alter names, or hide specific alter names but include preferred terms/boundaries.
  • get experience for doing more things; to-dos, quick plans, activities
  • Create a guided onboarding setup where user can define terminology, default tracked habits/symptoms, some activities, and then alter setup, to help encourage and guide first time setup, and allow users to toggle features off, so they know that all features can be turned off so as to not be overwhelming with things you may not use
  • better medication tracking?
  • revamp the therapy report to be better formatted, more comprehensive, maybe a "system introduction" that can give a summary of like, what alters have greatest distress or specific emotions or etc.
  • a "scroll block" in the pinned alters bar, that can be toggled on - basically a blank space you can position so if you are scrolling you can drag the block instead of accidentally triggering the slide-to-front gesture
  • UI overhaul; standardizing analogous elements, decluttering, maximizing accessibility
    • backup import/export condensed
    • need to go through every section tbh
    • settings menu
    • desktop UI improvements/fixes - popups are awkward spacing-wise and the activity tracker feels slow
  • expand and refine the preview mode
  • gotta get rid of the "First, choose how your data is stored You can change this anytime in Settings." in the onboarding screen since it has no context anymore
  • Ability to create new "systems", essentially independent account profiles
  • ensure push notifications work fully!
  • external relationships (contacts)
  • import from octocon, amparsand
  • Add next/previous section buttons to the quick check-in
  • should be able to set a planned activity as active/in progress
  • There should be a "last check-in" or smthn near quick-check-in
  • New presences feature
  • be able to do just "good" or "bad" or neutral, just selelect these as base emotions instead of requiring further specificity
  • should be able to set alter to front from their profile
  • ability to mass-archive alters
  • When completing a plan, ought to be able to write a note
